PRESS RELEASE

FIVE CENTURIES OF SWEDISH SILVER FROM THE RÖHSSKA MUSEUM

The only museum in Sweden dedicated to Design, Fashion and Decorative Arts.

For almost two years the exhibition Five Centuries of Swedish Silver has toured through North America and China. The exhibition was first displayed at the San Francisco International Airport Museum in 2006. From there, the exhibition travelled on to National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and Scandinavia House in New York in 2007. After this it went on to Shanghai Museum, the last stop at the exhibition tour in the autumn of 2007. The 180 unique items from the Röhsska Museum’s collection are objects from the Swedish Silver tradition from early 16th Century until today, which we are happy to finally presents here in Göteborg during the summer of 2008. The exhibition Five Centuries of Swedish Silver consists of tankards, coffeepots, teapots, bowls, candlesticks, vases, cocktail shakers and place settings which all reveal the different trends and customs in Sweden spanning many centuries; as well as demonstrate how international exchange has created compelling interpretations of style, technique and design in the process of silver making. The oldest piece is a spoon from the beginning of the sixteenth century and the most recent item is from year 2006. Among the works included in the exhibition are a teapot made in 1768 by Johan Christoffer Jungmarker; a cocktail shaker from 1937-38 by Count Sigvard Bernadotte, designer for Georg Jensen in Copenhagen (1930-2002); and a contemporary teapot (2004) by Lars Håkansson.

The exhibition runs 4th of June – 28th of September 2008
